SUBWAY ART – A playful journey through the underground world of graffiti

This spring, Ostend is once again all about street art. In addition to the impressive murals around the city, The Crystal Ship is pulling out all the stops this year with a unique indoor experience: the Subway Art exhibition.

To mark the tenth edition of The Crystal Ship, the SUBWAY ART exhibition invites you to return to the origins of street art. Because in the beginning, there was... graffiti.

What is now embraced worldwide as street art has its roots in the underground graffiti culture of the 1960s. Even before murals colored the cityscape and social media accelerated their spread, ‘writers’ sought out the shadows rather than the light.

In the mysterious setting of Fort Napoleon, you literally step into that dark world. Like Ariadne's thread, you follow the path of an imaginary writer, jointly created by artists Bruno Brunet, Benoît Brasseur, and the Crafteke collective. Along the way, you will learn about the language of graffiti and its evolution from underground subculture to international art form.
